Moving House Storage Checklist

A step-by-step plan for putting belongings into storage and bringing them back out. Use it for a gap between properties, downsizing or preparing rooms before moving in.

Before You Choose Storage

  1. Write down the dates. Note when you must leave, when the next property is available and which dates are still uncertain.
  2. Separate the load. Make lists for “take with me”, “store” and “not moving”. Keep essentials and important paperwork accessible to you.
  3. Measure large furniture. Record the size of items that cannot be dismantled, not only the number of rooms.
  4. Count the boxes. Allow for things still in cupboards, sheds or other rooms when estimating the load.

Use our container size guide and ask about your actual inventory. A typical house-size example is not a guarantee that your belongings fit.

Before You Book Transport

  • Check current container availability in the booking system.
  • Read the billing period, rental period and notice/cancellation terms.
  • Confirm any cover requirements and goods restrictions.
  • Discuss delicate, valuable, unusual or condition-sensitive items with the team.
  • Check the site route, access arrangements and vehicle suitability with your removal company.

For our North Cornwall site, the address is Hengar Lane, St Tudy, Bodmin, PL30 3PH. Use the location page rather than assuming a branch is in the nearby town you searched for.

The Week Before Moving

Label boxes by room and number, then keep a separate inventory. Bag and label fixings with the relevant furniture. Read the furniture packing guide for a measured layout and protective preparation.

Agree who is responsible for transport, loading, the booking and collecting anything needed later. Confirm access times before setting a departure time; Stora currently publishes Monday–Saturday 7am–6pm and Sunday 8am–6pm for our site.

On the Day You Put Goods into Storage

  1. Keep your essentials out of the storage load.
  2. Check that the agreed container and arrangements match your booking.
  3. Load in a stable order, leaving items needed sooner accessible.
  4. Take a photo of the layout and update your inventory.
  5. Follow the team’s handover and supplied-lock arrangements.

If an arrangement differs from what you expected, ask the team before leaving goods or changing the plan.

If Your Moving Dates Change

Contact the storage team and removal company before changing the collection plan. Recheck the agreement rather than assuming that a new date, an extension or a shorter rental can always be accommodated.

Make a list of anything you need during the delay. A good inventory and loading plan make a small collection easier than unpacking the whole container.

Before the Final Collection

  • Confirm the current notice requirements and final arrangements.
  • Check vehicle capacity and the route to the next property.
  • Plan the unloading order by room.
  • Check the container against your inventory before leaving.
  • Follow the agreed process for the lock and completing the rental.
